Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set with his upcoming new release in 2021. Gangubai Kathiawadi is an Indian movie based on the Hindi language, starring Alia Bhatt in the lead. The genre revolves around biographical crime, taken from the book – Mafia Queens of Mumbai, by Hussain Zaidi. Gangubai Kothewali, was the boss lady of a brothel in Kamathipura. The film features Alia Bhatt as Gangubai, while Vijay Raaz, Shantanu Maheshwari, Seema Pahwa, and Indira Tiwari playing supporting roles, with special cameos by Ajay Devgan, Huma Qureshi. and Emraan Hashmi.
The story revolves around the life of Gangubai Kothewali, who was a young girl and got taken into prostitution by her boyfriend named Ramnik Lal, and from there she became the lady boss of a brothel in Kamathipura. The movie will be revolving around the life of Gangubai Kothewali, characterized a strong, controversial woman who displayed herself as the -Madam of Kamathipura - in the '60s. Sections of her story are addressed from a chapter dedicated to her in the book called Mafia Queens of Mumbai, written by best-selling author and investigative journalist S Hussain Zaidi.
The well-known Mafia Queen Gangubai Kathiwadi took birth in a renowned family of Kathiawad Gujarat. Her actual name was Ganga Harjivandas.
Later, after growing up she became an Indian criminal, don, sex worker, businesswoman; all in all, a controversial figure from Kathiawar, India, after she got deceived by Ramnik (her boyfriend ) and got sold to a brothel at ₹500. She operated a sex community in the Hera Mandi red light district. She was a very popular and influential figure in Mumbai through the 60s.
The shoot for Gangubai Kathiawadi kicked off in the month of December 2019. Back then, Bhatt posted a picture of her vanity van with a ‘Gangubai’ sticker on it to share the news, and captioned it saying, "Look what Santa gave me this year.”
The movie, previously finalised for a September 2020 release,and will now hit screens on July 30, 2021.
